Current Student OpportunitiesA FINE event for Doctoral Students in Education The Universitas 21 Doctoral Students in Education held the first FINE event in Chicago last year just before the 2007 AERA conference.Come and join us for the second U21 Doctoral Students Forum for International Networking in Education (another FINE event!). The Forum will be held on the day before the commencement of the annual conference of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in New York. information U21 Scholarships for UCD Summer School The 60th UCD International Summer School, which will be held in Dublin from 18 to 27 June 2008, will be on the theme of Shared Histories: Plantation, Migration, Integration and the Irish. It will focus on the history of plantation and settlement, its role in moulding the Irish and Irish society and its contribution to the formation of the Irish diaspora. Five full-fee scholarships to this International Summer School will be offered to students and junior researchers in Universitas 21 partner institutions. In order to be considered for a scholarship, candidates should submit a short paper (maximum 1,500 words) on the following question: “From transplantation to transformation? Assess the contribution of migration to Irish society.” The Summer School will bring together established senior academics working in the field and emerging scholars pursuing new lines of inquiry. Participants in the Summer School will have the opportunity to attend lectures on key themes and issues. They will have an unprecedented chance to engage in discussion with the speakers. In moderated discussion groups and seminars they will have the opportunity to debate the issues raised and discussed using document and archive material as the basis for discussion. The programme will include a number of day and overnight trips, including visits to key historical and cultural sites central to the themes covered in the Summer School. Clinical placement opportunities are currently available for medical students at Tabubil Hospital in the Western Province Region of Papua New Guinea. Students are responsible for operating a low-cost telemedicine support service for the hospital doctors with specialist advice provided by consultant staff from the U21 universities. This is part of the U21 e-health project, which aims to provide a framework for exploring opportunities for collaborative research, information exchange and sharing of resources. One of the goals is to identify new ways that e-health and e-learning can be used to meet challenges in global health-care delivery. The University of Auckland Business School has a number of PhD Scholarships available for students who will commence their studies in 2008. Each scholarship is for three years. Each year the recipient will receive NZ$25,000 plus tuition fees. Additionally, part-time teaching appointments are available for scholarship holders. The scholarships will be awarded based on the applicant’s potential to conduct PhD research at a world class level.Applications from any business discipline or economics are invited. Postgraduate and Research Manager The UREKA international summer programme is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in pioneering research in the area of gene expression & protein function. Such research promises to provide a molecular understanding of human diseases that are characterised by abnormal gene expression. The programme is under-pinned by state-of-the-art technologies available on site at UCD. Research topics include cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, meiosis and immunology A weekly stipend will be paid to each student and campus housing will be provided and a contribution to travel expenses will be available for international students. U21 / RICS scholarship programme Students studying property and construction are able to take advantage of a new travel scheme being offered by the Royal Institution for Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Universitas 21 (U21). The scheme, entitled Explore: Achieve offers students the chance to study at other Universitas 21 institutions across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. Students gain both vital international expertise in this globally competitive business and also a welcome boost in appeal to future employers on graduation. Students may spend up to a year studying at another university and their study remains recognised by RICS for professional qualification.
