The sixteenth in the series of International Meetings of University Administrators is being hosted in August of this year by U21 member, the University of British Columbia. UBC is following in the footsteps of six other current U21 members who have hosted this event in the past. There is a distinct U21 flavour to this year’s conference. Its theme is Internationalisation of Higher Education, and U21 Secretary General Jane Usherwood will present a paper on ‘Internationalisation Through Networks’. There will be speakers from three other U21 member institutions, and the conference chair is Melvyn Cornish, U21 Manager at Edinburgh. Early registration numbers exceed targets and the organisers look forward to welcoming managers and administrators from around the globe: they currently have registrations from over 25 countries, and an excellent programme of speakers – including a Nobel laureate – and participants’ papers: the quality and the international character of the event are assured. It is not too late to register for the conference at www.imua2008.ca. The organisers very much hope you can join them in August for what promises to be a most informative and enjoyable higher education conference in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The Eidos Institute Breakfast Series is one of Australia’s foremost forums for public and private researchers and policymakers in human capital and education to discuss social and economic trends and challenges that are critical to the success of their organisations now and in the future. The series attracts speakers of national and international standing, sharing their insights and experiences as educational and social leaders. In Brisbane on 28 May 2008, former chair of U21 Professor John Hay will be speaking on Higher Education as a national priority: what sort of revolution is needed? The University of Edinburgh is hosting this conference from 28-30 May 2008. The spirit of this event is interdisciplinary and multicultural with the main aim being to establish research and development needs, networks and strategies to achieve water and sanitation related UN Millennium Development Goals in international development. Papers, submitted from over 45 countries, are currently in
review for publication. A significant number of sponsors are helping with part
travel bursaries for developing country participants - we welcome further
sponsors given the large number of potential participants from such countries. A
great social programme accompanies the event with an African-Scottish theme
including an African Dinner in the spectacular Playfair Library, the Inaugural
lecture and reception and a Ceilidh/African Dancing Event. We have further
arranged for a number of surprises to make this workshop a very special event
for all participants and stimulate research strategies. http://www.lifelong.ed.ac.uk/water_and_sanitation_2008/
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Universitas 21 has created a scheme to encourage staff mobility between participating universities. Called Anniversary Fellowships to mark the inaugural meeting of the network in March 1997, 13 of the member universities will have funds available to foster the triple network aims of collaboration, co-operation and comprehensive involvement. The Fellowships will enable applicants to travel to and undertake research at another member university in another country for a longer period of time than is usually possible and as such will be distinct from the ‘study tour’ which many member universities are able to support from their existing internal resources. Each participating university will be promoting the scheme to their staff over the remaining months of 2007 and reports of Fellowships awarded will be posted on our website together with information about longer term collaborations forged through the scheme. If you have received a U21 Fellowship, please record your visit via our online form.
