Nottingham and Birmingham Professors scoop Nobel Prize honours

• Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart, Honorary Professor in Chemistry at the University of Nottingham and former Head of the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
• Professor stoddart was jointly awarded the prize after helping to develop machines a thousand times thinner than a strand of human hair.
• The University of Birmingham celebrated a double success after former Professors Mike Kosterlitz and David Thouless were also awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics.

UJ to host THE BRICS Summit next month

• Times Higher Education's third BRICS & Emeriging Economies Summit will be held in partnership with the University of Johannesburg on 30 November to 2 December.
• The event will bring together higher education sector leaders, policymakers, academics and industry figures with the theme "Re-imagining the world-class university".
• The event will explore strategies for driving up quality in teaching, research and knowledge transfer and will include the official launch of the 2017 THE BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings.
• U21 Provost, Professor Bairbre Redmond, will speak on the place of global networks in re-imagining the future society.

U21 Health Sciences Teaching Excellence Awards announced

• Dr Emma Beckman, the University of Queensland, and Donna Drynan, the University of British Columbia, are the winners for 2016.
• Dr Luis Ibañez, Chair of the U21 Health Sciences Executive Committee, announced the winners of the award in Birmingham on 14 September 2016.
• Many congratulations go to Emma and Donna, who will run a workshop together at the U21 HSG Annual Meeting in Johannesburg in September 2017.

U21 Health Teaching Excellence Awards

The University of Edinburgh host Senior Leaders' meeting

• Senior Leaders from 23 members gathered in Edinburgh for the 2016 Senior Leaders' Group meeting.
• The three day event, which took place on 5 to 7 May, comprised of workshops and presentations from Senior Leaders from across the U21 network.
• Many thanks go to The University of Edinburgh for hosting the event.
• The next Senior Leaders' meeting will be hosted by Korea University in October 2017.



Educational Innovation

U21 Shared Online Course (U21 SOC) – “Planetary Urbanisation – Global Challenges in a Changing World”

• The newly developed course will run its first iteration beginning 24 October.
• As part of the 5-week course participants will be introduced to the challenges of planetary urbanisation to understand better how humans are responding to the global challenges of urbanisation.
• The U21 SOC will allow participants to engage in ongoing discussion with fellow students from across the U21 network, to exchange ideas, opinions and experiences.

Researcher Engagement

#U213MT competition – videos online and voting open!

• The 2016 U21 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is underway with 20 video entries from across the network.
• Each member put forward the winner of their internal competition to take part in the U21 3MT.
• The videos are available online with the People’s Choice voting open until 24 October.
• Our judging panel will choose a winner and runner-up and voting will decide the People’s Choice winner, with all three being announced on 1 November.

Graduate Research Projects grants update

• A new activity being piloted by the Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies (DDoGS), these projects aim to enable doctoral candidates to develop and implement international research collaborations within the U21 network.
• In the first round of funding we received over 30 applications, covering a wide variety of disciplines and were very impressed with the innovative ideas put forward in the applications.
• Following the review process we were able to fund 7 projects – details of which along with the members involved will be showcased in the November edition of U21:Discover.
• A second round of funding will take place in 2017, with dates to be announced in U21:Connect and on our website in due course.

2017 Undergraduate Research Conference

• The University of Edinburgh will host the 2017 Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) on the theme of ‘Future Societies, Global Citizens’.
• The conference will take place on 26 to 30 June 2017.

Round-up of Summer/Winter activities

• The Social Entrepreneur Corps took place in Ecuador this year with 18 students from 8 member institutions participating.
• The U21 Summer School was hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University on the theme of ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine and its Culture’. Where a new approach to the format was introduced with a virtual online element comprising a MOOC open to all U21 students.
• The U21 Undergraduate Research Conference was hosted by Tecnológico de Monterrey (TEC) on the theme of ‘A global perspective on ageing societies’.
• Similarly to the U21 Summer School at SJTU, there was a virtual online element which live-streamed components of the conference to a wider audience.



People & Places

UNSW Australia to recruit 1,000 researchers

• UNSW has raised targets for a large academic recruitment drive by over 50 percent, with plans to build capability in areas of artificial intelligence and data security.
• Earlier this year UNSW unveiled its largest ever undertaking to recruit up to 130 world-leading researchers as well as 500 new PhD candidates through fully-funded scholarships.
• The new goal is to bring on board 290 researchers and 700 PhD scholars.

Lund University stem cell researcher awarded Fernström Prize

• Professor Malin Parmar has received the award for her studies on how to repair a brain that has suffered damage, with the help of advanced research methods.
• The Fernström Foundation presents prizes to researchers at the six faculties of medicine in Sweden.
• Professor Parmar will be presented with the SEK 100,000 award to help further her work during the 'Researcher Day' event in Lund on 2 November.

Fudan's first female Party Chief

• JIAO Yang, Vice President of the All-China Women's Federation, was named to the position this month.
• She becomes the first female Party Chief of Fudan University, return to her Alma Mater 30 years after graduating with a degree in journalism.
• She later served as Deputy Secretary and Secretary of Fudan's Youth League Committee.

Auckland launches $300M fundraising campaign

• The university's 'For All Our Futures' campaign aims to raise the money to tackle the big questions facing New Zealand communities such as 'how do we earthquake proof the country?'
• The campaign, launched by university Vice-Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon, aims to apply more of Auckland's researchers and speed up research in key areas.
• The university has already raised half of the total figure through philanthropic donations, but hopes to complete fundraising by 2020.
