Welcome to the January e-bulletin with the latest news and items of interest to staff and students across the Universitas 21 network.


Registration Opens for Global Citizenship Workshop

A participative workshop on Global Citizenship will be held at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus from 13-14 March 2014. This workshop will explore our current understanding and approaches to developing the attributes of a “Global Citizen”, and specifically address the question of how a global university network can develop activities that support partner organisations in enhancing student engagement with an understanding of Global Citizenship.

Members from the following groups are encouraged to attend, particularly where individuals or teams have already engaged with issues relating to Global Citizenship in their own institutions:

  • Students (one nomination per institution)
  • Professional Services
  • Academics

New Deadline for Student Leaders’ Network Meeting

The inaugural meeting of the Student Leaders’ Network will take place at Lund University from 24-25 February 2014. The meeting will focus on open discussion to establish how the Student Leaders’ Network will operate. U21 Members are invited to send up to two representatives, chosen from their organised student bodies. The participating leaders should be currently engaged in student participation and educational issues at their institution and must be willing to represent the voice of students at their university.

Glasgow AGM Registration Reminder

Registration for the 2014 Annual Network Meeting, Presidential Symposium and related business meetings, to be held at the University of Glasgow from 14-16 May, is now open.

This event provides an annual opportunity for U21 Presidents and Vice-Chancellors to meet with their peers from around our network to discuss matters of importance to Universitas 21 and plan for the future year's activity.Alongside the formal business meetings, the annual Presidential Symposium will take place with the theme:The Shape of the University of the Future.

Registration Page Now Online for Researcher Engagement Meetings

Registration is now open for the two Researcher Engagement cluster meetings, taking place at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile from 3-4 April 2014.

The Research Leaders' group and the Deans & Directors of Graduate Studies group will be meeting in parallel sessions. Agendas for both meetings are currently being drawn up and will be circulated nearer the time.

Registration Now Open for Researcher Collaboration Group Workshop

Registration is now open for the second Researcher Collaboration Group workshop, being hosted by the University of Maryland from 7-8 April 2014. The 2014 workshop will explore funding opportunities available from American sources, and the group will also use this event as a means to share knowledge of all U21 regional funding bodies and grants available to fund international joint projects and mobility. 2013 U21 3MT Entries Available to View Online

Following the inaugural U21 3MT competition, which was held in October 2013, all video entries from the 18 finalists are available to view online via the following link:


Although voting for the 2013 competition is now closed, members may find the videos of interest regarding entry for the next competition, which will take place in October 2014. Any institutions which would like to take part in the competition should contact Gemma Marakas if they have not already done so (g.marakas@bham.ac.uk). New U21 Manager at UConn

Previous U21 Manager for the University of Connecticut, Dr Elizabeth Mahan, retired from her role as Executive Director for the Office of Global Affairs in December 2013. On behalf of the network we thank Dr Mahan for her commitment to U21 during her time in this role. Dr Daniel Weiner, Vice Provost for Global Affairs at Connecticut, became U21 Manager for the university in January. We look forward to working with him more closely n the future.

Change of U21 Manager at NUS

Associate Professor Anne Pakir stepped down from her role as U21 Manager for the National University of Singapore in December 2013. We thank Associate Professor Pakir for her dedication to the network while Manager at NUS. Mr Bernard Toh, Director (Special Projects), Office of the Vice-President  at NUS, became U21 Manager for the university in January. We welcome Mr Toh to the U21 network.

Maternity Cover at Amsterdam

Current U21 Manager for the University of Amsterdam, Ms Anouk Tso, began her maternity leave from the institution on 23 December 2013. Ms Tso will be returning on 12 May 2014 but in the interim Ms Babs van den Bergh, Head of the Department of Academic Affairs, will keep an eye on U21 matters. We congratulate Ms Anouk on her imminent new arrival and look forward to working with Ms van den Bergh over the coming months.


Lund and Amsterdam Announce International Staff Week

Together, the University of Amsterdam and Lund University will be hosting an International Staff Week from 7 - 11 April 2014, open to all staff from U21 members. The week is a collaboration between the two universities and provides a unique opportunity for participants to visit both institutions in one week. The event also offers participants a valuable opportunity to develop personal and professional skills, to participate in various social and cultural events, and to meet with staff of the University of Amsterdam and Lund University. Queensland and Ohio Sign Student Mobility Agreement

The University of Queensland and The Ohio State University signed a five-year agreement on 5 December 2013, to encourage and support student exchange and joint research activities between the institutions. One key element in the agreement is the establishment of the UQ-Ohio State Exchange Program Fund which will support scholarship and programme expenses for students. On behalf of U21 we congratulate both members on this inspirational step and look forward to reporting on the programme’s developments in the coming months and years.
