| Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL)
is not new to higher education, but in a research intensive
environment it is beginning to be re-packaged. Enquiry-Based
Learning can include approaches such as problem-based learning,
project work, case studies, fieldwork and individual/group research
activities. The key components, common to the variety of
Enquiry-Based Learning approaches, are that a) students are
encouraged to be self-directed, b) group work is central to the
process and c) real-life enquiries (triggers/problems/questions) are
used as the starting point. This approach aligns, therefore, with
the aspirations of many Universities’ strategic education and
research plans.
This session will provide an opportunity, using an EBL format, for participants to compare and contrast their experiences and views on Enquiry-Based Learning. In particular, University College Dublin and the University of Glasgow participants will share their experiences of its use. It will highlight the important steps required to prepare students for group-work and it will describe some of the assessment strategies that align, in particular, with the group-work element of this approach. |
