The University of Connecticut is consistently ranked by US News & World Report as one of the best public universities in the United States and for eleven years it has been ranked the top public university in New England.

It has invested in its teaching, research and outreach in keeping with its mission as a federal land-grant university. It is also a Carnegie Foundation Research University, lauded for the breadth and the range of its research programmes.  In fact, research opportunities abound even for undergraduate students.

The University began in 1881 as an agricultural school after two brothers donated 170 acres to the State of Connecticut.  By 1939, it had evolved into a major Ph.D.-granting university. Today, it is recognised for its strong programmes in dental medicine, law, education, linguistics, kinesiology, history, psychology, pharmacy, real estate and economics, among others.

The University has more than 100 research centres and institutes that serve UConn’s teaching, research, diversity, and outreach missions.

The University has 14 schools and colleges, awards seven undergraduate degrees in 101 majors, 17 graduate degrees and five professional degrees. Its campuses include the main campus in Storrs, five regional campuses (in Stamford, West Hartford, Groton, Torrington and Waterbury), a health centre in Farmington that houses the medical, dental and epidemiology programs and the University’s hospital, and a law school in Hartford

The University’s international ties are growing and many of its programmes, including human rights, biology, business, psychology, business, social work and engineering, have a global focus. The Centre for Health Intervention and Prevention’s work has projects underway, or planned, in China, Ethiopia, India, Malaysia, Mozambique, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, Uganda, Ukraine and Vietnam. In addition, UConn has strong partnerships with many of the best universities in the world. 

The University endeavours to provide every student an opportunity to graduate with a significant international experience in an effort to prepare them to address the global challenges in our interconnected world.

Enrolment at the University is 29.517, including 21,496 undergraduates.  There are 9,293 faculty and staff members and more than 200,000 alumni.
