Profile: University of Birmingham

The University of BirminghamThe University of Birmingham is located in the city of Birmingham, the UK’s second most populous city after London, in the heart of England. The city, which is friendly, lively and multicultural, is at the centre of the UK's road and rail network, and has an international airport. Our green and tranquil campus is located 5km south of the city centre, very close to the world-famous Edgbaston cricket ground.

Students enjoy an excellent quality of life on campus, with access to facilities (academic, sporting, leisure and welfare) which are among the best in the UK. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in science, engineering, health sciences, business, and humanities. Most teaching departments, student accommodation and other facilities are on our main campus.

Our standards of research and teaching are consistently high. In the UK Government's 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, 32 of our subject areas received the highest ratings of 5 or 5*. The Government's Quality Assurance Agency regularly examines all universities' teaching and out of a maximum of 24 points, our departments’ results average more than 22.

Each year, over 4,000 international students from 150 countries study at the University of Birmingham, enhancing our reputation as a truly international university, and adding to our diverse range of cultures, views and opinions.
