FINE networking event planned for ECER in Helsinki
FINE is planning its next networking event at the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) in Helsinki (23-37 August 2010). As part of the pre-conference and the main conference there will be the chance for U21/FINE students to share their conference experience at two breakfasts on the 24th and 26th of August, which will be free for every U21/FINE member.
The breakfast is primarily aimed at providing opportunities for students to network professionally and socially, and to promote collaborative research and enhanced academic/career prospects. Every student at a U21 University is automatically a member of the FINE network and is more than welcome to join the events.
If you would like to attend contact Ulrike Woitsch or Radhika Gorur.
Networking opportunity for Education students
All Universitas 21 Graduate Students who are planning to attend the 2010 American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual meeting are invited to participate in the events hosted by FINE.
Like previous years, FINE plans to host a half-day forum in the afternoon and a social dinner preconference on 29 April, and breakfast meetings on 1 and 3 May. To facilitate the planning of the events, please email us now if you are interested in attending any of the events. You will be contacted closer to the conference date for confirmation of your attendance. It would also help us if you could e-mail your ideas for FINE’s goals for 2010-2011, and suggestions of topics you would like to see presented/discussed at the forum. Some possible topics include getting published, networking tips, surviving the PhD student experience, life after PhD, and how to make the most of the AERA conference. Any other ideas or thoughts are welcome.
Also, if you are planning to attend the NASAP - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education annual conference from 6 to 10 March in Chicago, email Colleen Doyle (University College Dublin) if you would like to meet up with other FINE members. If you are planning to attend the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) in Helsinki, Finland on 25 to 27 August (preconference 23 to 24 August), or the Association for Teacher Education in Europe (ATEE) conference on 26 to 30 August in Budapest, Hungary, email Elizabeth O’Gorman for FINE gatherings.
FINE Breakfast in Amsterdam
Post-graduate students in education from around the globe attending the JURE and EARLI conference in Amsterdam (24-29 August 2009) were invited to meet each other over a relaxed breakfast, funded by U21 to support the aims of FINE. Eleven people attended, including students from Auckland, Nottingham, McGill and Melbourne Universities and a supportive academic from Melbourne University. The venue chosen was the Victoria Hotel dining room, a short tram ride to the conference venue. The comfortable setting and delicious buffet breakfast led to friendly and productive conversation, so much so that contact continued throughout the conference including the conference dinner on the last evening, where many of these post-graduate students shared a table together. It was wonderful to find friendly faces at an overseas conference, to be able to share student experiences and learn of each other's research interests. The group wishes to thank David Clarke for his role in the organizing the breakfast meeting and FINE for making it possible.
